Don't see a class near your location? Online classes are available. Municipalities interested in scheduling a SKYWARN weather awareness session should drop a note to the NWS Wakefield Outreach team.
NEW: On-line SKYWARN Spotter Training - If you are unable to attend local SKYWARN Training in person, online spotter training is now available! The online course was developed by the National Weather Service through COMET. The program is intended to support, enhance and stimulate learning about atmospheric and related sciences. The course serves as a optional prerequisite for our local SKYWARN training, and may also be used as a alternate means of instruction for those unable to attend NWS-supported spotter training classes. However, the online course is NOT intended to replace the SKYWARN spotter training classes offered by your National Weather Service Forecast Office in Wakefield. Whether attending a class in person or online FOLLOW-UP TRAINING IS REQUIRED EVERY 3 YEARS TO MAINTAIN ACTIVE SKYWARN STATUS!
The goal of the SKYWARN course is to provide baseline training for all volunteer weather spotters through multiple modules, covering the procedures for spotting (including communication and spotter report criteria) and safety considerations for all hazards. There are presently two modules available including the Role of the SKYWARN Spotter and SKYWARN Spotter Convective Basics. Students must register on the MetEd website to take these courses. Anyone who completes this online course and passes the associated quiz with a score of 70% or better will become an offically trained SKYWARN spotter.
- To register as a Wakefield SKYWARN Spotter: Register as a SKYWARN Spotter after successfully completing the online course. Then, complete and e-mail our SKYWARN registration form to our office's SKYWARN coordinator Mike Montefusco.

"ADVANCED SKYWARN class" (optional)- The ADVANCED SKYWARN session lasts approximately 3 hours, and builds upon principles taught in the BASIC session. Attendance at an NWS Wakefield Basic SKYWARN session is recommended before attending a basic SKYWARN session.
