A Look Back at "Irene"
Hurricane Irene, the fifth costliest United States hurricane, was a large tropical cyclone, which affected much of the east coast of the United States during the 2011 Atlantic hurricane season. It was the ninth named storm, the first hurricane, and first major hurricane of the 2011 hurricane season. This system was first named by the National Hurricane Center on August 20, 2011. For Eastern New York and adjacent Western New England, Irene will be remembered for its destructive flooding impacts, a new New York State Precip Record at Tannersville , and its name officially retired from the official list of Atlantic Basin tropical storm names by the World Meteorological Organization’s (WMO) hurricane committee.
