June 19, 2007 Delaware County Flash Flood
Slowing moving thunderstorms dropped an estimated 6 to 8 inches over southern
Delaware County at the western end of New York's Catskill Mountain Park. The rain occurred between
430 pm and 830 pm Tuesday June 19th 2007 with the bulk of the rain occurring from 6 pm to 8 pm.
Preliminary information...
- There was a flash flood warning issued with 29 minutes lead time for Delaware County.
- There were also 3 severe thunderstorm warnings issued for Delaware County that day too.
- The first minor flood reports came in at 705 PM EDT with the more significant flash flooding occurring between 730 PM EDT and 830 PM EDT.
- Route 206 between Rockland NY and Downsville, NY and the surrounding neighborhoods were hardest hit with major flash flooding.
Route 206 is completely gone in one area with a 25 foot gully cut across the road from flood waters.
- 10 other roads in this area severely damaged by flood waters.
- A 4 foot wall of water was observing flowing in this area by state police.
- Recovery operations continue.
- 37 homes were affected by flood waters, with 30 homes either totally destroyed or damaged beyond repair including 4 homes completely washed away on the side of a hill.
- 2 bridges destroyed.
- Estimated 4-5 million dollars worth of damage to county infrastructure.
- Unfortunately there were 2 fatalities and 2 people missing.
