A plot of rotational velocity vs. distance from the radar for storms in central NY and northeast Pa from April 2003 – May 2004. T=tornado, H=large hail, W=wind damage, N=no severe weather.
This plot shows how the rotational velocity (Vr shear) for the storms in Steuben and Otsego County on May 22-23 compared to other, severe weather producing storms in central NY and northeast Pa during the past couple of years. The rotation with these two storms was near the high end of what has been observed in our area during the past couple of years.
