Tioga County New York Acheives StormReady Recognition from National Weather Service in Binghamton New York

Tioga Storm Ready Ceremony

Dave Nicosia(right) Acting Meteorologist-In-Charge NWS Binghamton, presents a StormReady Road sign to Marty Borko (middle) Tioga County Legislative Chair and Peter Ward, Chair of the Tioga County Public Safety Committee.

The ceremony took place at a monthly Tioga County Legislative Meeting and was attended by the legislative members, the public, 4 TV stations and 1 newspaper. Several interviews were given by Dave Nicosia, Marty Borko and Peter Ward on this accomplishment. This is a very important accomplishment for Tioga County which has a long history of flash floods, river floods, tornadoes and severe storms.

Tioga County joins 6 other counties and 3 communities in New York as the program continues to grow and flourish in New York State.

StormReady is a nationwide community preparedness program that uses a grassroots approach to help communities develop plans to handle all types of severe weather from tornadoes to blizzards. The program encourages communities to take a new, proactive approach to improving local hazardous weather operations by providing emergency managers with clear-cut guidelines on how to improve their hazardous weather operations.

Specifically StormReady Counties have to meet the following criteria to achieve this recognition:

To be officially StormReady, a community must:
  • Establish a 24-hour warning point and emergency operations center.
  • Have more than one way to receive severe weather warnings and forecasts and to alert the public
  • Create a system that monitors weather conditions locally.
  • Promote the importance of public readiness through community seminars.
  • Develop a formal hazardous weather plan, which includes training severe weather spotters and holding emergency exercises.
