2010 Skywarn Recognition Day
WX1BTV was on air for the 2010 Skywarn Recognition Day with the special event call sign W1V. We had our best year ever with 107 contacts, 11 of which were other National Weather Service offices. A new Windom antenna and a surprise addition of an Elecraft K3 transceiver helped overcome some of our local noise problems that result from our location in the airport terminal building. However it was still a struggle at times to hear a QSL in the noise.
Carl AB1DD and Ed W1OKH along with Greg KB1GYE from the NWS were on the evening shift from 00 UTC to 04 UTC, but didn't have much success. The evening started with the Whiteface Mountain weather net on 145.110, then Carl hooked up the K3. Our local noise problems prevented success in making voice contacts on HF bands, but we had 3 contacts on digital PSK. Ed made some tries on CW, but no luck.
Conditions were better Saturday morning, when Carl returned for an all day shift, along with morning crew John N1YSD and son Mike KB1TQS, and John KB1QBI from the NWS. They logged 40 contacts in 2.5 hours, with a nice pileup for about 1.5 hours on 20 meters. Things quieted down around midday for Bob W4YFJ and Greg, then later in the afternoon Zach K1ZK and Willow W1LLW stopped by. Zach got on 40 meters and pushed the tally over the century mark. We finally shut it down around 5:30 pm.
Thanks to our volunteers who took time out of their weekend to stop by and help out. A big thank you goes to Carl for working Friday evening and all day Saturday, and for the use of his fine radio.
