Snow
depth is measured at the National Weather Service Office every six hours. Yes,
it is as simple as sticking a ruler into the ground and reading the result. In
practice, several measurements are taken over a region and the result is
averaged.
One
measure of "winter harshness" is the number of days that snow remains on
the ground. The graphs below show the number of days during each snow season
that certain snow depths were measured at the office. These depths are for the
early morning hours (0700 EST). The year on the bottom axis is the later snow
season year. For example the 2001-2002 snow season is above the 2002 label.
