VALENTINE'S DAY

THE HIGHEST TEMPERATURE EVER RECORDED ON VALENTINES DAY WAS 57 DEGREES IN 1946.  THE LOWEST OCCURRED IN 1943 WHEN THE MERCURY DIPPED TO MINUS 13.  NORMALLY, THE HIGH TEMPERATURE AVERAGES AROUND 33 DEGREES AND THE LOW NEAR 19.

THE MOST PRECIPITATION ON VALENTINES DAY WAS 1.35 INCHES IN 1950. THE MOST SNOW FELL IN 1960 WHEN 12.0 INCHES WAS RECORDED.

IN 1876, WHIRLWINDS PASSED OVER THE EASTERN PART OF THE CITY ABOUT 8:30AM.  IT CARRIED OFF THE ROOF OF THE SLAUGHTER HOUSE AND TRANSPORTED A PORTION OF THE ROOF...WEIGHING ABOUT A TON...FOR ABOUT 1000 FEET.

A SNOWSTORM IN 1940 DUMPED 6.5 INCHES OF SNOW ON BUFFALO.  OWING TO THE RATHER STRONG NORTHEAST WINDS (25 TO 30 MPH THROUGHOUT THE DAY) THE POWDER DRIFTED SOMEWHAT.  LOCAL TRAFFIC OF ALL KINDS WAS SLOWED DOWN, BUT NOT NEARLY TO THE EXTENT THAT SOMETIMES OCCURS IN SEVERE SOUTHWEST STORMS IN THIS REGION.

IN 1946, GALE FORCE WINDS PREVAILED FROM 5:30AM TO ABOUT NOON.  SOME BUILDINGS WERE UNROOFED, WINDOWS SHATTERED, POLES AND TREES FELLED, AND SOME HOUSES WERE BLOWN DOWN IN THE GALE.  WIND DRIVEN ICE IN LAKE ERIE TORE A 200 FOOT BREAK IN THE BIRD ISLAND PIER.  SAFETY ROPES WERE STRETCHED IN DOWNTOWN AREAS OF BUFFALO TO AID PEDESTRIANS.
