VETERAN'S DAY

ARMISTICE DAY...NOVEMBER 11...WAS ESTABLISHED IN 1926 TO COMMEMORATE THE SIGNING IN 1918 OF THE ARMISTICE ENDING WWI.  ON JUNE 1, 1954, THE NAME WAS CHANGED TO VETERAN'S DAY TO HONOR ALL MEN AND WOMEN WHO HAVE SERVED AMERICA IN ITS ARMED FORCES.

THE HIGHEST TEMPERATURE EVER RECORDED IN BUFFALO ON VETERAN'S DAY WAS IN 1964 WHEN A HIGH OF 68 DEGREES WAS REACHED.  THE LOWEST TEMPERATURE EVER RECORDED WAS 19 DEGREES IN 1957.  NORMALLY, THE HIGH TEMPERATURE AVERAGES AROUND 47 DEGREES WHILE THE LOW AVERAGES NEAR 35 DEGREES.

THERE IS ROUGHLY A 70 PERCENT CHANCE OF PRECIPITATION OF A TRACE OR MORE.

STEADY RAIN IN 1995 DROPPED 1.40 INCHES ON BUFFALO...THE MOST PRECIPITATION EVER RECORDED ON A VETERAN'S DAY.  THE MOST SNOW THAT FELL ON VETERAN'S DAY OCCURRED IN 1942 WHEN 5.3 INCHES WAS RECORDED.

ON VETERAN'S DAY IN 1977, A HEAVY LAKE‑EFFECT SNOWSTORM HIT THE NORTHERN EDGE AND NORTHERN SUBURBS OF BUFFALO DURING THE EARLY MORNING HOURS.  WHILE UNDER THREE INCHES OF SNOW WAS RECORDED AT THE AIRPORT, SIX TO NINE INCHES OF HEAVY, WET SNOW WERE RECEIVED BY THE NORTHERN SECTIONS.  THE WEIGHT OF THE SNOW AND MODERATELY STRONG WINDS SNAPPED POWER LINES AND DOWNED LARGE TREE LIMBS.
