COLUMBUS DAY

COLUMBUS DAY IS TRADITIONALLY OBSERVED ON OCTOBER 12TH BUT SINCE THE MONDAY HOLIDAY BILL, MORE COMMONLY OBSERVED ON THE SECOND MONDAY IN OCTOBER.  COLUMBUS DAY COMMEMORATES THE DISCOVERY OF AMERICA BY COLUMBUS IN 1492.  QUITE LIKELY, THE FIRST CELEBRATION OF COLUMBUS DAY WAS THAT ORGANIZED IN 1792 BY THE SOCIETY OF ST. TAMMANY, OR COLUMBIAN ORDER, MORE WIDELY KNOWN AS TAMMANY HALL.

THE HIGHEST TEMPERATURE EVER RECORDED IN ROCHESTER ON COLUMBUS DAY WAS ON OCTOBER 13, 1975.  THOUGH THE SKIES WERE PARTLY SUNNY, THE HIGH TEMPERATURE FOR THE DAY WAS 85 DEGREES.  THE COLDEST TEMPERATURE EVER RECORDED WAS 30 DEGREES ON OCTOBER 12, 1981.  NORMALLY, THE HIGH TEMPERATURE AVERAGES ABOUT 62 DEGREES WHILE THE LOW AVERAGES 49 DEGREES.

THERE IS ROUGHLY A 50 PERCENT CHANCE OF HAVING PRECIPITATION OF A TRACE OR MORE ON COLUMBUS DAY.  STEADY RAIN ON OCTOBER 12, 1946 DROPPED 1.29 INCHES ON ROCHESTER...THE MOST PRECIPITATION EVER RECORDED ON COLUMBUS DAY.

THERE WAS A TRACE OF SNOW RECORDED ON TWO OF THE PAST 68 COLUMBUS DAYS.
