Lake Effect Storm Season 2005-2006    

We name our lake snow events so it is easier to refer back to them for archiving.  This is very unofficial and only past storms are named as a matter of policy.  We will post the archived events on this WEB SITE so it is easier for you to refer back to them throughout the snow season.

The theme for this year's storm names is Cats as selected by the staff at NWS Buffalo.  We also will continue our tradition of a candid way to rate the storm's impact on the area.  It is termed the "Lake Flake Scale" and subjectively ranks the events from 1-flake (*) for minor (wimpy) events to 5-flakes (*****) for epic mega-storms, based not only on snowfall amounts but the impact on population centers as well.

For each event we try to provide a snowfall map, storm summary and if available, radar, satellite and other neat images.  Let us know what you think, we are open for any suggestions to improve the page.

Abyssinian 11/16 - 11/17 *** High impact on densely populated Buffalo South Towns. First snow of the season.
Max snowfall:  Lake Erie - Elma 18",  Lake Ontario - Carthage 9".
Bengal 11/24 - 11/25 *** Two part episode, initially over snowbelts, but northward swing severely impacted metro Buffalo and Watertown. 
Max snowfall: Lake. Erie - Ellicottville 24", Lake Ontario - West Leyden 24".
Chartreux 12/2 - 12/3 *** Hybrid event evolving from synoptic, frontal and then pure lake effect. Good upstream connection. Large gradient from lakeshore (low) to inland (high). 
Max snowfall: Lake. Erie - Jamestown 18", Lake Ontario - Point Rock 27".
Devonrex 12/4 - 12/5 ** Localized but fairly intense event off Lake Ontario. 
Max snowfall: Little off Erie, Lake Ontario - Redfield 16".
Egyptianmau 12/6 - 12/7 **** Intense classic westerly flow lake storm. 
Max snowfall: Lake Erie - Perrysburg 29", Lake Ontario - Mexico 17".
Felix 12/12 * Evolved from a synoptic feature. 
Max snowfall: Lake Erie - Perrysburg 4 ", Lake Ontario - Scriba 9 ".
Germanrex 12/19 *** Intense "classic" event off Lake Ontario. 
Max snowfall: Lake Erie - Stockton 8 ", Lake Ontario - N. Osceola 28".
Himalayan 12/20 * Moderate brief post-frontal event. 
Max snowfall: Lake Erie - Chaffee 10", Lake Ontario - N. Osceola 14".
Iriomote 1/18 - 1/19 * Brief post-frontal event.
Max snowfall: Lake Erie - East Aurora 4", Lake Ontario - Hooker 11".
Javanese 2/5 - 2/8 *** Strong "pattern changing" event, which lingered as it tapered off.
Max snowfall: Lake Erie - Warsaw 26", Lake Ontario - Hooker 33".
Korat 2/13 - 2/14 ** Strong winds, squally, long fetch, meandering bands, late season.
Max snowfall: Lake Erie - Alden, Elma 9", Lake Ontario - Copenhagen 14".
LaPerm 2/17 - 2/21 ** Long lasting multipart event, primarily Lake Ontario, marginal Lake Erie, Late season.
Max snowfall: Lake Erie - Darien, Warsaw 9", Lake Ontario - Hooker 35".
Manx 3/18 - 3/20 * Marginal late season event, moisture advecting from north.
Max Snowfall: Lake Erie - Warsaw 4", Lake Ontario - Syracuse area 7".
