Lake Erie ice cover Mar 23rd, 2001

The ice cover on Lake Erie continued to melt away on the 23rd. This image not only shows the ice cover, but we can see the fresh snow cover that pelted the area a few days before. In fact, you can see where that most of northern Erie, Niagara and Orleans counties were spared from the snow event that was best described as an "elevation-type" snowstorm.  Snowfall total in the Finger Lakes Region actually ranged from 1 to 3 inches at lower elevations to nearly a foot on hilltops!
