Lake Erie ice cover Jan 21st, 2003

This image was taken at 11:45AM on January 21st.  It has been quite cloudy over the Great Lakes so far this season and this is the first time we have had a good chance to see through the clouds.  There is significant ice cover on Lake Erie as you can see.  In fact, the only open water is in an area east of Long Point, which typically is the last area to freeze over each year.  There is very little ice cover on Lake Ontario, the only area with any widespread ice is up near the St. Lawrence River.
