2004-05 Eastern Great Lakes Ice Cover Shots

For the 2004-05 season, we have made some changes to our page to make use of the newer data sets and satellite information that is available.  The information provided below is brought to you by the NWS office in Buffalo, NY.  All of these fantastic images have been accessed of the Naval Research Laboratory web site's National Polar Orbiting Environmental Satellite System (NPOESS).  To ge to the site, just go to the following link:

NexSat, NRL/NPOESS Next-Generation Weather Satellite Demonstration Project

The accompanying  ice charts are provided by the National Ice Center.

The page tracks the seasonal development of ice cover on the eastern Great Lakes.  Meteorologists monitor ice conditions for several reason, most importantly to determine the potential contribution from the open waters of the Great Lakes for lake effect snow storms.

Hope you enjoy the pages!
