For the 2004-05 season, we have made some changes to our page to make use of the newer data sets and satellite information that is available. The accompanying ice charts are provided by the National Ice Center.

The page tracks the seasonal development of ice cover on the eastern Great Lakes. Meteorologists monitor ice conditions for several reason, most importantly to determine the potential contribution from the open waters of the Great Lakes for lake effect snow storms.
