Visible satellite image of ice cover February 5, 2000

After a couple of weeks of below freezing temperatures, Lake Erie developed significant ice cover. In fact, the only appreciable areas that seem to be open are just east of Long Point, Ontario and just east of the Islands over the western end of the lake.  Clouds blanket Lake Ontario.  We were able to get a cloud free image of Lake Ontario from 01/28/2000 and as shown below, the only portion of that lake that has ice cover is over the northeast section and along the shorelines. Don't forget, Lake Ontario is much deeper and than Lake Erie and rarely develops significant ice cover.
