Satellite View of ice cover February 12, 2000


Close-ups of Lake Erie (above) and Lake Ontario (bottom) clearly show the difference in ice cover.  These images were taken at the same time during the afternoon on sunny day.   Check out the fissures on the ice on Lake Erie. Notice on Lake Ontario that there are two patches of white that are actually clouds, but there is significant ice at the northeast end of the lake, and plenty of thicker pack ice surrounding the Thousand Islands Region.
