Lake Erie ice cover March 3, 2000

Wow!!   After a week or so of very mild temperatures, there has been a dramatic reduction in ice cover on Lake Erie.  In fact, the only appreciable ice cover seems to be at the east end of the lake, where pack ice still can be found.  There may still be "slush" ice floating in parts of the lake but the satellite image can't confirm it. Also, notice the great outline of the snow cover from the recent snow event.  Buffalo and the extreme west end of the state have no snow, but only a few miles east across areas like Elma, Akron and Batavia we can still see snow.
