Lake Flake Scale: ** 2 Flakes

The second event of the winter season brought a white Thanksgiving to much of the region. A cold westerly flow set up bands of heavy lake snows over northwest Ohio and northwest Pennsylvania before daybreak on the 28th which dropped 6 to 8 inches around Erie. Some of this activity extended into western Chautauqua county where 3 inches fell at Westfield. Over on the other lake...northwest winds brought multiple banded 1 to 3 inch snows from Wayne to Oswego counties during the morning.

The activity broke apart for a few hours late in the morning off Lake Erie but re-established itself on a 270 vector by mid afternoon with some heavy bands across northern Chautauqua and northern Cattaraugus counties. This activity dropped snow at over an inch per hour in the Dunkirk area in late afternoon. The band drifted north during the evening dropping four inches across the South Towns and an inch in Buffalo at midnight before strong warm advection shut down the activity by 1 am on 29th.

Off Lake Ontario...the westerly flow really set up an intense band over northern Oswego and southern Lewis county by late afternoon which remained stationary until almost midnight before drifting north and weakening and ending by daybreak on 29th. Over a foot fell across the Tug Hill and much of Lewis County.

Final snowfall totals ran 6 to 10 inches off Erie and 6 to 20 inches off Ontario. The most unique thing about this event was the abrupt ending due to strong warm advection.

Overall...the event was relatively tame but did affect some population in the Dunkirk-Fredonia area and, to a lesser degree, the Buffalo South Towns. The Lake Ontario activity was mainly over low population areas. It did occur late on Thanksgiving Day though, so had some limited traffic impacts. For that reason..."Bjerknes" earns a two (**) star rating.
