MASA MODIS Ice Image (500m resolution)

This is an amazing image that came from the NASA MODIS site showing the ice on Lake Erie and Ontario at 500m resolution taken in the first week of February.   Notice all of the cracks in the ice cover on Lake Erie.  No wonder people get stranded out on that ice.  On Lake Ontario we see a thin line of ice just off the south shore of the lake.  Southerly winds pushed that ice offshore more than likely.  In fact, we can confirm that winds are southerly because the entire north half of the lake is covered by narrow lake effect snow clouds as a result of the southerly flow.  This is an amazing shot.  You can even see what looks to be a Great Lakes "iceberg" that broke away from Irondequoit Bay in this image!
