The MODIS images below were taken from the AQUA polar orbiting satellite this past Sunday February 24, 2008, just before 2PM EST. These images are available about once or twice per day, and have a resolution of 250 m. On a clear winter day, these images provide a fantastic overhead view of ice cover over the Great Lakes. In this case, you can clearly see that nearly all of Lake Erie is covered in ice, with an opening near Long Point, ON, along with large but thin breaks throughout the lake. Meanwhile for comparison, Lake Ontario is nearly ice free, except for some widespread ice cover found over the northeast portion of the lake. In the zoomed in image focused over Buffalo, you can see ice cover over the retention ponds just north of Niagara Falls, ice covering the smaller Western Finger Lakes, and ice cover over most of the smaller lakes and ponds throughout Western New York. Also notable is the snow cover over Western New York, with less snow cover over the Western portion of the Finger Lakes region and Genesee Valley. Another area of snow cover can be found east of Rochester and into the Tug Hill Plateau.
