...MARCH 2011 WEATHER SUMMARY FOR THE MIDLANDS AND CSRA...

IN GENERAL...THE FIRST HALF OF MARCH 2011 WAS CLOSE TO NORMAL HAS A 
NEARLY ZONAL FLOW...WEST TO EAST...PERSISTED. TEMPERATURES AND 
PRECIPITATION RANGED AROUND NORMAL. THE PATTERN BECAME MORE 
AMPLIFIED DURING THE MIDDLE AND LATER PORTION OF THE MONTH. A PERIOD 
OF ABOVE NORMAL TEMPERATURES EXTENDED FROM 19TH THROUGH THE 
24TH...WITH A STRETCH OF BELOW TEMPERATURES THAT ROUNDED OUT THE 
REMAINDER OF THE MONTH. OVERALL...THE AVERAGE TEMPERATURE FOR THE 
MONTH ENDED UP ABOVE NORMAL...AND THE TOTAL MONTHLY PRECIPITATION 
ENDED UP AROUND NORMAL. 

SIGNIFICANT EVENTS...

THERE WERE TWO SIGNIFICANT EVENTS DURING THE MONTH OF MARCH. ON 
MARCH 9TH...A STRONG COLD FRONT APPROACHED THE REGION FROM THE WEST 
AND PRODUCED SEVERE THUNDERSTORMS ACROSS THE CENTRAL SAVANNAH RIVER 
AREA AND SOUTHERN MIDLANDS OF SOUTH CAROLINA. THE STORMS PRODUCED 
WINDS FROM 50 TO 70 KNOTS THAT BROUGHT DOWN LARGE LIMBS AND TREES. 
ON THE 19TH...A COLD FRONT MOVED FROM NORTH TO SOUTH ACROSS THE 
REGION. THE FRONT SPAWNED A CLUSTER OF SEVERE THUNDERSTORMS THAT 

MOVED FROM THE UPSTATE SOUTHEAST INTO THE MIDLANDS. THERE WAS A 
REPORT OF A FUNNEL CLOUD IN SALUDA COUNTY AS WELL AS QUARTER SIZE 
HAIL THAT COVERED THE GROUND. 

TEMPERATURES...

NO DAILY LOW TEMPERATURE RECORDS WERE ESTABLISHED.
