...OCTOBER 2011 WEATHER SUMMARY FOR THE MIDLANDS AND CSRA...

...BELOW NORMAL TEMPERATURES AT BOTH AUGUSTA AND COLUMBIA...
...12TH COOLEST OCTOBER ON RECORD AT AUGUSTA...
...FIRST MONTH SINCE JANUARY WITH THE AVERAGE MONTHLY 
TEMPERATURE BELOW NORMAL AT BOTH AUGUSTA AND COLUMBIA...
...FIRST FROST OF THE SEASON AT MANY LOCATIONS ON THE 30TH...
...BELOW NORMAL PRECIPITATION CONTINUES ACROSS THE AREA...

OCTOBER BROUGHT SOME MUCH NEEDED RELIEF FROM THE LONG STRING OF 
ABOVE NORMAL TEMPERATURES ACROSS THE AREA. IT WAS THE FIRST MONTH 
AT BOTH COLUMBIA METRO AIRPORT AND AUGUSTA REGIONAL BUSH FIELD WHERE 
THE AVERAGE MONTHLY TEMPERATURE WAS BELOW NORMAL. THE MONTH WAS ALSO 
THE 12TH COOLEST OCTOBER ON RECORD AT AUGUSTA. HOWEVER...THE DRY 
WEATHER CONTINUED ACROSS THE AREA DURING THE MONTH WITH MOST AREAS 
AVERAGING AROUND 2 INCHES OF RAIN. RAINFALL CONTINUED TO BE BELOW 
NORMAL AT BOTH COLUMBIA METRO AIRPORT AND AUGUSTA REGIONAL BUSH 
FIELD. THE COOL OCTOBER WEATHER WAS THE RESULT OF AN UPPER LEVEL 
TROUGH THAT PERSISTED OVER THE EASTERN PORTION OF THE COUNTRY FOR 
MUCH OF THE MONTH. TEMPERATURES AVERAGED 5 TO 10 DEGREES BELOW 
NORMAL FOR THE FIRST WEEK...THEN AGAIN THE THIRD AND FOURTH WEEKS OF 
THE MONTH DUE TO THIS FEATURE. MANY LOCATIONS SAW THE FIRST FROST OF 
THE FALL SEASON ON THE 30TH AS TEMPERATURES DROPPED INTO THE UPPER 
20S TO MIDDLE 30S.

OWENS FIELD DOWNTOWN AIRPORT....36 MPH ON THE 19TH

WEATHER OBSERVERS MANY LOCATIONS ONLY RECEIVED AROUND 3 INCHES OF 
RAIN DURING THE MONTH.

SIGNIFICANT EVENTS...

ON THE 13TH...SCATTERED THUNDERSTORMS...SOME SEVERE...PRODUCED 
NUMEROUS REPORTS OF WIND DAMAGE ACROSS THE CENTRAL SAVANNAH RIVER 
AREA NORTHEAST INTO THE CENTRAL MIDLANDS. THE STORMS WERE MOVING 
VERY FAST WITH AN AVERAGE SPEED NEAR 50 MPH. THE STORMS DOWNED 
NUMEROUS TREES AND POWERLINES. IN MCDUFFIE COUNTY...NEAR THOMSON... 
A TREE FELL ON A MOBILE HOME. IN COLUMBIA COUNTY...IN THE SPRING 
LAKES SUBDIVISION...A TREE FELL ON A TRUCK. FORTUNATELY...NO ONE WAS 
INJURED DURING THE EVENT. 

ON THE 18TH-19TH...A DEEP CLOSED LOW AND A STRONG ASSOCIATED SURFACE 
LOW PRESSURE AREA MOVED ACROSS THE SOUTHEAST AND PRODUCED 1 TO 1.50 
INCHES OF RAINFALL ACROSS THE AREA. 

ON THE 30TH...A COLD AIRMASS SETTLED IN OVER THE AREA AND PRODUCED 
THE FIRST FROST AND FREEZING TEMPERATURES. HERE ARE SOME OF THE
