Charleston, SC WSR-88D Radar Dual Polarization Upgrade Complete


Dual-polarimetric radar transmits electromagnetic pulses horizontally as well as vertically whereas the current doppler radar only transmits pulses in a horizontal direction.

The Charleston, South Carolina Weather Surveillance Radar (WSR-88D), also known as KCLX, has been upgraded with dual-polarization technology as of October 22. The upgrade is part of the NWS vision to build a Weather-Ready Nation in order to better protect lives and livelihoods. The main advantages of the new capabilities will be improvement of rainfall amounts and precipitation type identification.
