NOAA Weather Kiosk Unveiled at Old Woman Creek National Estuarine Research Reserve

NWS Cleveland's Michael Abair Has Key Role in Kiosk Development

Old Woman Creek National Estuarine Research Reserve, located on 572 acres along the Lake Erie coast in Northern Ohio, provides resources for people from a variety of backgrounds — from professional researchers, students, or those who enjoy walking the nature trails.

Now, thanks to a partnership between the National Weather Service Cleveland, Ohio, Weather Forecast Office and Old Woman Creek NERR, visitors to the reserve have a new resource available to learn about the one thing that affects them all: the weather.

The partnership goes back for many years. In 2006, NWS forecaster Michael Abair visited the estuary to discuss developing a NOAA Weather interactive display. After hearing the comment “Weather affects everything here,” from Dr. David Klarer, Research Coordinator at Old Woman Creek, Abair decided to take on the task of creating an interactive kiosk to provide information and education about weather, as well as the role of NOAA in the Great Lakes and how it is tied to the reserve.

Over the past several years, Abair has worked closely with the staff at Old Woman Creek NERR, as well as many other NOAA partners throughout the Great Lakes Region, to develop an interactive NOAA Weather kiosk. On October 21, 2011, Old Woman Creek NERR unveiled the remodeled visitor center in the Mike DeWine Center for Coastal Wetland Studies. Among the new exhibits and interactive electronic displays was the NOAA Weather kiosk.

“The Visitor Center is a huge success!” said Ann Keefe, ODNR Division of Wildlife’s Education Coordinator at the Old Woman Creek NERR. “The NOAA Weather kiosk is a great tool for visitors, boaters, canoers, and researchers to have easy access to weather information. The NOAA featured case study example of how weather impacts Old Woman Creek Estuary is the wonderful result of a long term research partnership the Division of Wildlife shares with NOAA’s National Weather Service.”

The NWS Cleveland Weather Forecast Office also installed a real-time weather display on a new 32-inch monitor. Abair configured the display to provide a quick view of current weather information. The display compliments the NOAA Weather kiosk, which provides an educational description of NOAA and weather information important to the estuary. NWS Senior Forecaster Marty Mullen, as well as several electronic technicians from the NWS Cleveland Weather Forecast Office, contributed to the real-time weather display.

Jennifer Day, Great Lakes Regional Coordinator, spoke at the dedication ceremony on behalf of NOAA. “The new NOAA Weather kiosk at the Old Woman Creek visitor center is a perfect example of how the different parts of NOAA can collaborate and create a hands-on learning tool for all ages that brings NOAA to those at the local level in a meaningful way,” Day said.

Abair added, “It’s nice to see a conceptual idea developed from scratch turned into a reality. The goal wasn’t about just displaying scientific information, but being able to educate people of all backgrounds on how weather and climate affect Old Woman Creek Estuary and the role NOAA actually plays in people’s lives.”
