...HARRISBURG SUMMER OF 2007 SUMMARY...

FOR THE THIRD YEAR IN A ROW THE SUMMER AVERAGED ABOVE NORMAL IN
THE STATE CAPITAL. THE METEOROLOGICAL SUMMER EXTENDS FROM JUNE
THROUGH AUGUST AND THIS YEAR THE AVERAGE TEMPERATURE WAS 74.5
DEGREES...OR 1.0 DEGREES ABOVE NORMAL. WHILE WARMER THAN
NORMAL...IT ONLY MANAGED TO BE 25TH AMONG THE WARMEST SUMMERS ON
RECORD. THE WARMEST SUMMER WAS BACK IN 1966 WHEN THE AVERAGE
TEMPERATURE WAS 77.6 DEGREES. RECORDS HAVE BEEN KEPT SINCE 1889.

ANOTHER MEASURE OF HOW WARM A SUMMER IS CAN BE REFLECTED BY THE
NUMBER OF TIMES THE MERCURY TOPS 90 DEGREES. THIS YEAR IN
HARRISBURG THE HIGH TEMPERATURE WAS 90 OR HIGHER 17 TIMES. IN A
NORMAL YEAR THIS OCCURS ABOUT 16 TIMES. LAST YEAR WE HIT 90 JUST
14 TIMES WHILE IN 2005 THE HIGH TOPPED 90 SOME 24 TIMES.

WHILE IT WAS WARM...IT WAS ALSO WETTER THAN NORMAL. THE 13.76
INCHES OF RAIN THAT FELL WAS 3.32 INCHES ABOVE NORMAL. THIS MADE
IT THE SECOND CONSECUTIVE SUMMER THAT ENDED UP WETTER THAN NORMAL.
THE ABOVE NORMAL RAINFALL COULD ONLY MANAGE TO BE 25TH ON THE LIST
OF WETTEST SUMMERS. THE WETTEST SUMMER WAS BACK IN 1972 WHEN
HURRICANE AGNES HELPED BRING A SOAKING 23.33 INCHES OF RAIN TO THE
AREA.

IN AN AVERAGE SUMMER WE CAN EXPECT TO SEE MEASURABLE PRECIPITATION
ON ABOUT 32 DAYS IN HARRISBURG. THIS SUMMER WAS VERY AVERAGE WITH
EXACTLY 32 DAYS BETWEEN JUNE 1ST AND AUGUST 31ST EXPERIENCING AT
LEAST .01 INCHES OF RAIN. OF THE 12 POSSIBLE WEEKENDS OF THE
SUMMER...JUST 5 FAILED TO REMAIN TOTALLY DRY. THIS NO DOUBT MADE
FOR PLENTY OF TIME TO ENJOY OUTDOOR ACTIVITIES.

HARRISBURG FOR JUNE THROUGH AUGUST.

FOR THE THIRD YEAR IN A ROW THE SUMMER AVERAGED WARMER THAN NORMAL
IN WILLIAMSPORT. THE METEOROLOGICAL SUMMER EXTENDS FROM JUNE
THROUGH AUGUST AND THIS YEAR THE AVERAGE TEMPERATURE WAS 72.0
DEGREES...OR 1.6 DEGREES ABOVE NORMAL. WHILE WARMER THAN
NORMAL...IT ONLY MANAGED TO BE 30TH AMONG THE WARMEST SUMMERS ON
RECORD. THE WARMEST SUMMER WAS BACK IN 1901 WHEN THE AVERAGE
TEMPERATURE WAS 75.0 DEGREES. RECORDS HAVE BEEN KEPT SINCE 1895.

ANOTHER MEASURE OF HOW WARM A SUMMER IS CAN BE REFLECTED BY THE
NUMBER OF TIMES THE MERCURY TOPS 90 DEGREES. THIS YEAR IN
WILLIAMSPORT THE HIGH TEMPERATURE WAS 90 OR HIGHER 21 TIMES. IN A
NORMAL YEAR THIS OCCURS ABOUT 13 TIMES. LAST YEAR WE HIT 90 JUST
10 TIMES WHILE IN 2005 THE HIGH TOPPED 90 SOME 24 TIMES.

DESPITE HAVING THE 6TH WETTEST AUGUST ON RECORD...IT COULD NOT
MAKE UP FOR THE VERY DRY MONTHS OF JUNE AND JULY. IN THE
END...THE 9.97 INCHES OF RAIN THAT FELL WAS 1.94 INCHES BELOW
NORMAL. THIS MADE IT THE FIRST DRY SUMMER IN THE LAST 5 YEARS IN
WILLIAMSPORT. THE BELOW NORMAL RAINFALL COULD ONLY MANAGE TO BE
37TH ON THE LIST OF DRIEST SUMMERS. THE DRIEST SUMMER WAS BACK IN
1909 WHEN JUST 6 INCHES OF RAIN FELL DURING THE THREE MONTH
PERIOD.

IN AN AVERAGE SUMMER WE CAN EXPECT TO SEE MEASURABLE PRECIPITATION
ON ABOUT 34 DAYS IN WILLIAMSPORT. THIS SUMMER WAS A LITTLE BELOW AVERAGE
WITH 32 DAYS BETWEEN JUNE 1ST AND AUGUST 31ST EXPERIENCING AT
LEAST .01 INCHES OF RAIN. OF THE 12 POSSIBLE WEEKENDS OF THE
SUMMER...JUST 4 FAILED TO REMAIN TOTALLY DRY.
