Harrisburg set both the September and Annual Rainfall Records for the Station on September 23rd, 2011
Friday’s rainfall pushed Harrisburg International Airport beyond both the September and annual rainfall records on September 23rd.
1.75 inches of rain fell through 5 pm Friday September 23rd. This pushed the September 2011 rainfall total up to 16.50 inches (and is 16.51 as of Sep 25th), which makes this the wettest September on record in Harrisburg. The previous wettest September came in 1975 when 14.97 inches of rain fell.
Harrisburg is still below the all-time record rainfall for any month, which occurred back in June of 1972 when hurricane Agnes helped to contribute to the 18.55 inches of rain that fell that month. With additional wet weather in the forecast for this week (the last week in September 2011), we will continue to gain ground on the June 1972 record.
For the Year (Annual):
Friday’s rainfall also pushed the annual 2011 precipitation to 59.89 inches (59.90 as of the 25th) at Harrisburg International Airport. This surpasses the previous wettest year on record, which dates back to 1972, when 59.27 inches of rain fell.
With over three months remaining in 2011, we will undoubtedly add to our annual record precipitation before the year is through.
