| FLASH FREEZES LIKELY LATE TONIGHT AND EARLY FRIDAY MORNING |
An arctic front and associated wave of low pressure will blast across central Pennsylvania late tonight and early Friday morning. A burst of precipitation (rain changing to snow, with light accumulations) will accompany the front, along with strong gusty winds and rapidly falling temperatures.
The animated image depicts the NAM12 model's surface temperature forecasts at 1 AM, 4 AM and 7 AM Friday morning. Note that 15F to 20F degree drops in 3 hours are indicated throughout central PA after the front passes. Pre-frontal temperatures in the upper 30s to lower 40s will drop to the lower to middle 20s in just a few hours.
Recent soaking rainfall and lack of wintry precipitation means that roadways have long since lost previous applications of melting agents/salt. The plunging temperatures early Friday morning will lead to flash freezes on untreated road surfaces.
Be alert for rapidly changing conditions overnight and early Friday morning! Be especially cautious on untreated highways and secondary roads as crews may be slower to respond to lesser traveled routes.
