Late April 2012 Snowfall
A heavy, wet snow fell over the northwestern half of the area from late Sunday (22nd) into early Tuesday (24th) morning. The snow turned to rain as the elevation dropped, so little if any snow accumulated below 1500 MSL. Even the higher ground around State College was white with 4+ inches on the ground on the ridges, but the town itself was just wet during the event despite a nearly-constant snowfall during the daylight hours on Monday. Late April sun/solar radiation is just the same strength as late August sun. It was hardly possible to get the snow to stick in the lower elevations during the daylight - unless it was snowing very hard. The highest snow total was from the NWS Co-Op observer at Laurel Summit (western Somerset County), where the observer measured a total of 23.7 inches. His snow was fluffier than the rest of the area with a 15:1 snow ratio, whereas most of the area had 10:1 ratios. Many mountain-top locations had more than 8 inches of snow total, while even the valleys in the Upper West Branch of the Susquehanna River in Clearfield County had less than an inch of accumulation.
