FLOOD WATCH
NATIONAL WEATHER SERVICE BUFFALO NY
155 PM EDT SUN MAR 15 2015

...ICE JAM FLOODING POSSIBLE TODAY AND AGAIN MONDAY AND MONDAY
NIGHT...

TEMPERATURES JUST ABOVE THE FREEZING MARK THIS AFTERNOON WILL ONLY
ALLOW FOR MINIMAL ADDITIONAL SNOWMELT. THIS SLOWING OF THE
SNOWMELT WILL ALSO EASE THE FLOW RATE ON AREA STREAMS AND CREEKS.
SEVERAL ICE JAMS CONTINUE ON AREA STREAMS AND CREEKS THIS
AFTERNOON...WITH SEVERAL CREEKS REPORTING LEVELS NEAR OR ABOVE
FLOOD STAGE. ADDITIONAL ICE JAM FORMATION IS NOT LIKELY THIS
EVENING AND OVERNIGHT.

TEMPERATURES ON MONDAY WILL RISE WELL INTO THE 40S WITH MID 50S
LIKELY INLAND AWAY FROM LAKE ERIE. THIS WARMTH WILL YIELD
ADDITIONAL SNOWMELT...WHICH WILL INCREASE STREAM AND CREEK FLOWS
AND AGAIN HEIGHTEN THE POSSIBILITY OF FLOODING DUE TO ICE JAMS.

ICE JAMS MOST COMMONLY FORM WHERE THERE ARE CONSTRICTIONS IN THE
RIVER OR CREEK CHANNEL...SUCH AS SHARP CURVES...BRIDGES...OR
OTHER OBSTRUCTIONS. ICE JAMS ALSO TEND TO OCCUR IN THE SAME
LOCATIONS YEAR AFTER YEAR.

PEOPLE LIVING IN AREAS THAT ARE PRONE TO ICE JAM FLOODING SHOULD
REMAIN ALERT AND BE PREPARED IF FLOODING DOES OCCUR.

...FLOOD WATCH NOW IN EFFECT THROUGH TUESDAY MORNING...

THE FLOOD WATCH IS NOW IN EFFECT FOR

* A PORTION OF WESTERN NEW YORK...INCLUDING THE FOLLOWING
  COUNTIES...CATTARAUGUS...CHAUTAUQUA...NORTHERN ERIE...SOUTHERN
  ERIE AND WYOMING.

* THROUGH TUESDAY MORNING.

* THERE CONTINUES TO BE A RISK FOR ICE JAM FLOODING IN THE WATCH
AREA THIS AFTERNOON. ALTHOUGH LITTLE ADDITIONAL RUN-OFF IS
EXPECTED...ICE HAS BROKEN UP ON SOME AREA CREEKS. THESE ICE
FLOWS MAY DEVELOP INTO ICE JAMS AND CAUSE FLOODING TODAY. THOSE
LOCATED IN AREAS TYPICALLY SUSCEPTIBLE TO ICE JAMS SHOULD BE
PREPARED TO TAKE ACTION IF FLOODING DOES DEVELOP. ADDITIONAL
WARMING ON MONDAY WILL AGAIN PRODUCE SNOWMELT RUNOFF WHICH WILL
INCREASE STREAM AND CREEK FLOWS. THIS RISE IN FLOW RATES WILL
FURTHER WEAKEN THE ICE ON THE LAKES...WHICH MAY LEAD TO
ADDITIONAL ICE JAMS. TEMPERATURES ARE EXPECTED TO REMAIN WELL
ABOVE FREEZING THROUGH THE NIGHT WHICH WILL CONTINUE THE
SNOWMELT WITHIN AREA STREAM AND CREEKS HEADWATERS. THIS WILL
CONTINUE THE RISK OF FLOODING MONDAY NIGHT. A COLD FRONT WILL
DROP ACROSS THE REGION LATE MONDAY NIGHT...WITH TEMPERATURES
DROPPING TO NEAR THE FREEZING MARK NEAR DAWN TUESDAY MORNING.

PRECAUTIONARY/PREPAREDNESS ACTIONS...

A FLOOD WATCH MEANS THERE IS A POTENTIAL FOR FLOODING BASED ON
CURRENT FORECASTS. YOU SHOULD MONITOR LATER FORECASTS AND BE
ALERT FOR POSSIBLE FLOOD WARNINGS. THOSE LIVING IN AREAS PRONE TO
FLOODING SHOULD BE PREPARED TO TAKE ACTION SHOULD FLOODING
DEVELOP. STAY TUNED TO WEATHER RADIO OR OTHER RADIO AND TV
STATIONS FOR FURTHER DETAILS OR UPDATES
