...WINTER WEATHER AWARENESS WEEK CONTINUES...

WINTER STORMS ARE CONSIDERED DECEPTIVE KILLERS BECAUSE MOST DEATHS
ARE INDIRECTLY RELATED TO THE STORM. PEOPLE DIE IN TRAFFIC
ACCIDENTS. THEY HAVE HEART ATTACKS WHILE SHOVELING SNOW...AND THEY
DIE OF HYPOTHERMIA FROM PROLONGED EXPOSURE TO THE COLD.

EVERYONE IS POTENTIALLY AT RISK DURING WINTER STORMS. THE ACTUAL
THREAT TO YOU DEPENDS ON YOUR SPECIFIC SITUATION. IN TERMS OF ICE
AND SNOW...RECENT OBSERVATIONS INDICATE ABOUT 70 PERCENT OF DEATHS
OCCUR IN AUTOMOBILES WHILE ABOUT 25 PERCENT ARE FROM PEOPLE BEING
CAUGHT OUT IN THE STORM. IN REGARDS TO EXPOSURE TO COLD...ABOUT 50
PERCENT OF DEATHS ARE PEOPLE OVER 60 YEARS OLD. OVER 75 PERCENT ARE
MALES.

IF YOU ARE CAUGHT IN A CAR OR TRUCK IN A WINTER STORM TRY TO GET TO
A SHELTER. IF YOU BECOME STRANDED...STAY IN YOUR VEHICLE.
DISORIENTATION OCCURS QUICKLY IN WIND DRIVEN SNOW AND COLD. RUN THE
MOTOR ABOUT 10 MINUTES PER HOUR FOR HEAT. OPEN A WINDOW A LITTLE
FOR FRESH AIR TO AVOID CARBON MONOXIDE POISONING...AND MAKE SURE THE
EXHAUST PIPE IS NOT BLOCKED.

SOUTH CAROLINA RARELY GETS SUCH SEVERE WINTER STORMS...BUT WHEN WE
DO...LIKE LAST YEAR...IT IS BEST TO BE PREPARED.
