This is a close-up of 0.5 degree base reflectivity shows the strong rotating thunderstorms in the spiral band along the edge of the dry slot over Hampton Roads at 1703 UTC. The yellow rings on two of the storms indicated mesocyclones detected by the National Severe Storms Laboratory mesocyclone detection algorithm. The storm on the right produced a tornado over northern Chesapeake and southern Norfolk less than 5 minutes later. The tornado was shown on the weather channel and the photograph was featured in newspapers. Note the curved appearance of each of the thunderstorms and the "hook echo" appearance.
