
February 2, 1996 - Ice/Sleet Storm over southeastern Virginia
During the morning hours of February 2, 1996 an ice and sleet storm moved over east-central Virginia
producing nearly a half-inch accumulation of ice in interior sections of southeastern Virginia. Hardest
hit areas were in Suffolk...Chesapeake...Newport News and Hampton. A significant accumulation of ice
was also reported in Norfolk and Virginia Beach. Further inland, two to three inches of sleet were reported
over Petersburg....Richmond and Hopewell. Temperatures dropped into the twenties over most of east-central
Virginia creating hazardous driving conditions and hampering road treatment work by the VDOT.
