Flooding deaths occur in all seasons

On average floods kill nearly 100 people and are responsible
for damages of nearly 5.0 billion dollars annually. 

 

Flash Flooding

  • Most flash flood deaths occur at night
  • People most at risk are those in automobiles
  • 2 feet of water will cause most cars to float
  • 6 inches of moving water can knock you off your feet

Tropical Inland Flooding

  • Inland freshwater floods have accounted for more than half of the U.S. tropical cyclone deaths over the past 30 years
  • At least 23% of U.S. tropical cyclone deaths occur to people who drown in, or attempting to abandon, their cars

Flood Definitions

  • Minor - minimal or no property damage, but possibly some public threat or inconvenience.
  • Moderate - some inundation of structures and roads near streams/rivers. Some evacuations of people and/or transfer of property to higher ground elevations necessary.
  • Major - extensive inundation of structures and roads. Significant evacuations of people and/or transfer of property to higher elevations.
