Snowstorm of 6-7January 2002

Low pressure developed over the Gulf of Mexico and moved rapidly northeastward on Sunday across the southeast united States.  By Sunday evening the storm was over the Delaware Coast.  This storm raced to the northeast past New England by early Monday morning.  This initial storm produced a short 6 to 8 hour period of heavy snow.  Just before midnight, snowfall rates reached 4 inches per hour in Albany for 2 successive hours.  The snow tapered off after midnight, but the storm was not over.  After about a 6 hour break in the snow, snow associated with an upper level area of low pressure began, with snow continuing much of the day Monday.  The heaviest snow fell in and around the Capital District.  Amounts decreased considerably as you travel north of the Capital Region.  For Albany, the 17.4 inches measured was the 5th biggest January snowstorm on record, and the 18th biggest snowstorm of all time.
