2006 Recreational Boating Statistics
- 4,967 accidents
- 710 fatalities
- 3,474 injuries
- $43,670,424 in property damage
- Two-third of all fatal boating accident victims drowned.
- In 90% of the fatalities the individual was not wearing a life jacket.
- Eight out of every 10 boaters who drowned were using boats less than 20 feet in length.
- Alcohol use is the leading contributing factor in fatal boating accidents;
accounting for nearly 20 percent of all reported fatalities.

2006 Recreational Boating Statistics
- Most reported type of accident was collision with another vessel.
- Half of boating accidents and 46% of fatalities occurred on lakes, ponds, reservoirs, dams, gravel pits.
- Twenty-three percent of boating accidents and 31% of fatalities occurred on rivers, streams and creeks.
- Seventy-nine percent of fatalities occurred on boats less 26 feet with 68% of those fatalities the result drowning.
Time of day, month of year and day of week:
- Over half (56%) of boating accidents occurred between 12:30-6:30 pm with a peak between 2:30 and 4:30 pm.
- One-third (34%) of boating fatalities occurred between 2:30-6:30 pm.
- July, June and August (respectively) were the months with the highest number of accidents. Over a quarter (28%) of the accidents occurred in July.
- July, June, May, and August (respectively) were the months with the highest number of fatalities.
- Half (51%) of the fatalities and 57% of the accidents occurred on Saturday and Sunday.
Weather and Water Conditions:
- Over half (53%) of boating accidents and 48% of fatalities occurred on calm water conditions (waves less than 6 inches).
- Over sixty percent (63%) of boating accidents and 55% of fatalities occurred with wind of 6 mph or less.
- Seventy-three percent of accidents and 62% of fatalities occurred with good visibilities during the day.
