Straight Line Thunderstorm Winds Rating EF1 on the Enhanced
Fujita Damage Scale Rip Through Parts of Delaware and Otsego Counties
Thursday Evening August 16th, 2007
A National Weather Service Storm Survey Team found evidence of very
strong straight line thunderstorm winds in southern Otsego County
and northwest Delaware County. There were areas with numerous large
trees uprooted and snapped. Some of the trees had diameters of
more than 2 feet. One large tree was blown down onto a car.
Fortunately no one was injured. In addition, two homes were damaged.
One had siding torn off and a small part of the roof peeled off.
Another home, which faced directly into the wind, had windows blown
in and a small part of the roof lifted off.
The thunderstorm winds struck around 6:30 PM EDT Thursday and
lasted for about 10 minutes. Tree damage was found along
an 8 mile long and 6 mile wide stretch from a few miles northwest of
Wells Bridge in the towns of Otego and Unadilla, south southeast
through Wells Bridge, and the towns of Sidney and Franklin.
The damage suggests that the top wind speeds were between 85 and 95
mph which rates an EF1 on the Enhanced Fujita Damage Scale. There
was no discernible evidence of a tornado.
