Severe Thunderstorms August 25, 2007
On August 25, 2007 the atmosphere across parts of Central New York and Northeast Pennsylvania
was warm, moist and unstable. A cold front moved across the area from northwest to southeast during
the afternoon and evening. Thunderstorms developed along and ahead of the cold front. Some of the storm
become severe producing wind damage and large hail.
A Storm Survey was conducted in the Rome, NY area on August 27, 2007.
The team found evidence of straight line thunderstorm wind damage in the north
part of the city of Rome in Oneida County. The hardest hit area was in and around
Holly Street, Beech Street, Hickory Street and Potter Road.
The damage began along Merrick Road where there were a few trees down and some
siding blown off a house. The heaviest damage occurred in a woodlot between Potter Road
and Beech Street where at least two dozen large trees were uprooted or snapped off.
Along Holly Street, one home was heavily damaged when a large silver maple tree
fell on it. There were several other homes in this general area that
were damaged by falling trees and branches. In one yard, a deck was
partially blown apart. This property was adjacent to the woodland that received the
heaviest damage.
Based on the damage to the trees, which in many instances were hardwoods,
maximum wind speeds were likely close to 90 mph.
