Eta 00 hour forecast theta-e (red), relative humidity (green) and EPV (negative shaded blue) valid 1/6/05 12 UTC.
The data on this slide shows diagnostics related to the potential for banded precipitation at 12 UTC on the 6th. The cross-section was taken roughly parallel to the thickness gradient, from the Delmarva area north to central New York. The sloping front in that area is indicated by the sloped theta-e lines (in red). Negative EPV, indicating instability to slantwise motions given saturation, is indicated by the blue shading. The pattern of negative EPV, located just above the sloping frontal zone in a near saturated region is favorable for the development of banding precipitation.
