Terminology and Definitions

Severe Weather Warnings and Outlooks
Product Description Awareness and Action Level
Hazardous Weather Outlook Issued at least once a day around 5 am to alert you to any potential weather hazards Stay tuned for later statements and be alert for the development of hazardous weather
Severe Weather Watches Issued when conditions become favorable for the development of severe weather Prepare and take necessary precautions in the event a warning is issued or severe weather is observed
Tornado Warning Issued when a tornado has been spotted or indicated by doppler radar Take immediate action to save lives and property
Severe Thunderstorm Warning Issued when large hail (3/4" or greater) and/or damaging winds (58 mph or greater) are immenent Take immediate action to save lives and property
Severe Weather Statement Updates the status of severe weather warnings and give more details on location and severity of storms  


Flood Warnings/Advisories and Outlooks
Product Description Awareness and Action Level
Hazardous Weather Outlook Issued at least once a day around 5 am to alert you to any potential weather hazards Stay tuned for later statements and be alert for the development of hazardous weather
Flood Watch Issued when conditions become favorable for flooding. Prepare and take necessary precautions in the event a warning is issued or flooding is observed.
Flash Flood Warning Issued when rapid and life threatening water rises are imminent. Take immediate action to save lives and property.
Flood and Flash Flood Statements Updates the status of warnings and gives specific details on the locations and severity of flooding  
Flood Warning Issued for main stem river flooding or over land flooding for an extended period of time. Take immediate action to save lives and property.
Flood Statement - River Flooding Used to update warnings for main stem river flooding or over land flooding for an extended period of time.  
Flood Advisory - Urban and Small Stream This advisory alerts the public to flooding which is generally only an inconvenience (not life-threatening) to those living in the affected area. Issued when heavy rain will cause flooding of streets and low-lying places in urban areas. Also used if small rural or urban streams are expected to reach or exceed bankfull. Some damage to homes or roads could occur. Prepare and take necessary precautions in the event a warning is issued or flooding is observed.

Local Storm Report Preliminary Local Storm Reports provide the Storm Prediction Center (SPC), adjacent WFOs, the public, media and emergency managers with reported observations of hazardous weather events. Preliminary Local Storm Reports also serve as the primary basis for the official monthly publication “Storm Data.”
