Lake Erie Ice and Snow Jan 21st, 2001

This image shows a good example of snow band formation even when there is significant ice cover on Lake Erie.  According to National Ice Center reports and satellite imagery from January 18th, the lake was about 70 to 80% ice covered. However, there may have been enough open water on the lake, combined with the differential friction between the rough land and smooth lake, to produce this cloud band.  Very little snowfall occurred from this band.  On Lake Ontario however, where there is plenty of open water, a somewhat stronger band of snow produced a few inches across Oswego county.
