"Lake
Effect" Type Snows Off the Asian Continent
Japanese
meteorologists have done extensive research on convective snows that develop
off the Sea of Japan and affect the western coasts Honshu and Hokkaido
Islands. Three main ingredients are responsible for these types of
snows, arctic air off the Siberian continent, the warm waters of the Sea
of Japan, and the higher elevations on the west coast of these islands.
It is also interesting to note that the same type of phenomenon has been
reported off the Yellow Sea across portions of Korea.
