Andromeda
- Storm Summary
This
first lake effect storm of the season occurred ahead of and along a fast
moving cold front that crossed Western New York early on Saturday, November
21st. Although surface temperatures were not that cold (low 30s),
the air was cold enough aloft to allow for a relatively steep lapse rate
to develop as the air moved across the 49 degree waters of Lakes Erie and
Ontario! The temperature differential between the warm lake and "cool"
air produced enough local instability to generate lake effect snowbands
off both lakes. As is often the case with early season snow storms,
the lakeshore areas received rainfall rather than snow. This was
due to the close proximity to the relatively warm lake. Maximum snowfall
was recorded at North Osceola in western Lewis county east of Lake
Ontario where orographic enhancement helped to produce 10 inches of wet
snow.
