Summer Vacation

No matter where you plan to go for your vacation, the National Weather Service can help you plan.  In addition to the obvious of checking the forecast for your destination before you go, you may want to consider taking a portable NOAA Weather Radio with you.  If your radio is equipped with the automatic tone alert feature, your weather radio will alert you to any approaching severe weather.  Having a weather radio along to keep abreast of any weather for the day is a good idea.  Especially when you are camping or staying in unsubstantial shelter, knowing the forecast will allow you to be prepared if weather suddenly becomes ugly.  As a general rule, most people are not familiar with the geographic features of their vacation area. Vulnerability to flooding, especially flash flood areas, can place your life in jeopardy.

Know at a glance if the area that you are visiting will be at risk for severe weather.  The Storm Prediction Center will be able to assist you at a glance, with additional details available at the individual NWS Offices

No trip to the beach would be complete without knowing the UV index and without understanding the dangers associated with sunburns.  Playing in the surf can be risky at times if you do not understand coastal Rip Currents and how to safely get out of one. Beach-goers also need to be weather wise and stay informed about the risk of any developing hurricanes. It is easy to do this by checking with the Tropical Prediction Center beforehand.

Have you ever thought about experimenting with a different career, but did not know if you would really like the change?  NOAA sponsors a chance for people interested in environmental stewardship challenges to volunteer at the coast.  Visit the special Internet site set up for people with this interest .
