neath the earth below the frost line and enter into a deeply dormant state. During hibernation, the woodchucks body temperature will drop to just a few degrees above freezing, and its heart rate drops to around four beats a minute. The woodchuck will not emerge again until early spring around the time of the thaw. Field and meadow mice continue to live all winter deep within tunnels under the snow. They feed on grains that remain from the summer and fall. Temperatures beneath the snow-pack usually drop to only a few degrees below freezing. Mice continue to breed in this quiet world between the snow and the ground. Many animals, including fox and bobcats, subsist on mice and other small rodents during the winter. They have exceptionally keen hearing and will spend the night prowling forests and meadows listening for mice and moles. They are capable of pouncing on these creatures right through the deep snow.

These changes will allow forecasts for Piscataquis and Washington Counties to be more area specific.
In addition to the new forecast zones...the zone configuration of Northwest and Northeast Aroostook County (zones 1 and 2 respectively) will also change. The new boundary between these two zones will have a breakpoint of 46.57N/68.82W to 47.27N/ 68.11W. This adjustment was made for topographical and climatological reasons.
The map on the next page (Page 8) depicts new zones 31 & 32 and the adjustment made to zones 1 & 2.
