at a glance, how highly esteemed he is in the world of natural history and television. He has an amazing enthusiasm for everything around him including the forest, my home, and the Maine life. I had so many questions about Sir Attenborough's life, his career, his traveling adventures, and his ideas on nature. But his intense enthusiasm about where he was at the present moment seemed to overwhelm any discussion of his previous explorations. When Sir Attenborough arrived, he relaxed and stayed warm in my house as the filming crew prepared a setting for him. Then late at night, he went out to the forest where the crew had designed a feeding station with sunflower seeds and peanuts on a giant mushroom fungus that was nailed to a tree. As the flying squirrels came to feed, the filming began, and Sir Attenborough gently approached the forest creatures. He lectured about the squirrels in very close proximity to them. I was amazed, in fact almost envious, at how incredibly relaxed the squirrels appeared to be in Sir Attenborough's presence. He seemed to know just how to pose, how to talk, and how to gesture in a way that allowed the squirrels to be comfortable in his presence.
