On
Friday, November 14th, the former Portland Weather Buoy,
which was in need of repair, was replaced with a new buoy.
We appreciate the efforts of those who worked so hard to keep
this valuable source of marine data funded!

The
new Portland weather buoy rests on the deck of the Coast Guard Cutter Willow
while awaiting deployment.

With
the mooring released, the crane gently lifts the buoy from the deck of
the Coast Guard Cutter Willow.
The
Buoy is lowered by crane into the rough coastal waters three miles off
Cape Elizabeth.
After
deployment, the buoy begins satellite transmission of critical wind, wave,
temperature, and pressure observations to Meteorologists on shore.
