...SAFE BOATING CLASSES... THE FOLLOWING IS A
SAFE BOATING MESSAGE FROM THE SOUTHPORT SAIL AND POWER SQUADRON
May 20 through May 26th is National Safe Boating Week. One of the primary recommendations of the National Safe
Boating Council is that all boaters take a safe boating class. Not only will this better prepare boaters to be safe
and have fun on the water, it may also qualify them for a discount on their marine insurance.
Prospective students can find out about safe boating courses by visiting the website of the
National Safe Boating Council: www.safeboatingcouncil.org. Some courses are offered on line.
However, taking a class locally helps students learn about local conditions and regulations and build
friendships with fellow boaters. Currently several local organizations offer safe boating classes: including
units of the United States Power Squadrons and the US Coast Guard Auxiliary, and other ASA affiliate sailing schools.
The most important safety recommendation of all these organizations is that one wear a personal
flotation device while engaged in recreational boating. Eighty-six percent of all boating
fatalities could have been prevented if persons had worn a personal flotation device.
