Life Jacket Program Southport Sail & Power Squadron
The single most important thing a person can do to avoid a boating
casualty is to wear a life jacket. Children ages 13 and under are
required by law to wear a jacket while topside on a boat. Adult
boaters may have a problem finding enough jackets in the right
sizes for visiting friends and grandchildren to wear, that they
will want to wear. Southport Sail and Power Squadron members are
working to solve that problem through a life jacket loaner program
for local residents.
The West Marine store near Wrightsville Beach has donated eight
colorful and comfortable life jackets to the Southport Sail and
Power Squadron to use in its educational and public service programs.
The Wal-Mart store in Southport has donated two toddler and one
infant jacket and whistles on lanyards to be attached to all the
program’s jackets. The life jackets will be on display at the
upcoming Boat Smart class offered by the Southport Sail and Power
Squadron, June 2, 3, and 4, 6-9 PM. For further information,
contact Carolyn Pryor at (910)-454-4479.
