...THE CAROLINAS COASTAL OCEAN OBSERVING AND PREDICTION SYSTEM...

THE FOLLOWING IS A SAFE BOATING MESSAGE FROM CARO-COOPS.

CARO-COOPS IS A NOAA-FUNDED PROGRAM, LED BY THE UNIVERSITY OF SOUTH CAROLINA AND NORTH CAROLINA STATE UNIVERSITY, THAT IS FOCUSED ON MONITORING AND MODELING COASTAL OCEAN CONDITIONS IN THE CAROLINAS. COLLABORATING INSTITUTIONS INCLUDE THE UNIVERSITY OF NORTH CAROLINA AT WILMINGTON AND THE SOUTH CAROLINA DEPARTMENT OF NATURAL RESOURCES. 

THE GOALS OF THE PROJECT ARE TO PROVIDE NEAR REAL-TIME CONDITIONS, AND ULTIMATELY PREDICTIVE CAPABILITIES, TO HELP MITIGATE NATURAL HAZARDS, SUPPORT THE MANAGEMENT OF MARINE RESOURCES AND ECOSYSTEMS, AND FACILITATE SAFE AND EFFICIENT MARINE OPERATIONS.

THE PRESENT OPERATIONAL AREA FOR THE CARO-COOPS OBSERVING NETWORK EXTENDS FROM SUNSET BEACH, NC, TO BEAUFORT, SC, AND OFFSHORE TO DEPTHS OF APPROXIMATELY 100 FEET.

THE OBSERVATIONAL ARRAY NOW CONSISTS OF FIVE OFFSHORE MOORINGS AND THREE PIER-BASED WATER LEVEL STATIONS THAT REPORT CONTINUOUS OCEANOGRAPHIC AND METEOROLOGICAL CONDITIONS IN NEAR REAL-TIME. FOR MORE INFORMATION, PLEASE VISIT www.caro-coops.org.
