...STAY AWAY FROM NAVAL VESSELS... THE FOLLOWING IS A
SAFE BOATING MESSAGE FROM THE NORTH STRAND SAIL AND POWER SQUADRON
The world we boat in has become more complicated since September 11, 2001. Boaters must now comply with
Homeland Security measures that require keeping a safe, prescribed distance from Navy and commercial ships.
Do not approach within 100 yards of a U. S. Naval vessel. If you need to do that to ensure a safe passage you
must contact the naval vessel or its Coast Guard escort on VHF channel 16. Do not proceed without clearance.
You must operate at minimum speed within 500 yards of a U. S. naval vessel and proceed as directed by it or its
patrol.
Violation of this Naval Protection Zone is a felony, inviting a quick and severe response. You could be
boarded, face a $250,000 fine, and time in prison. Learn where security zones are and avoid them. Avoid
commercial port operations areas, especially those with military, cruise line, or petroleum facilities.
Also avoid restricted areas near dams and power plants.
